Excerpt:

As I looked around, I noticed that more people were starting to arrive. I also noticed musicians were setting up their equipment. Robert walked over to a microphone that had already been set up. He made a request for everyone to be seated. We all crossed the lawn to our respective seats. Andre held Katie’s hand in one of his and he kept his arm around my waist. We took our seats. As Robert continued speaking about his years of marriage to Monica, I took a moment to observe the people sitting amongst us and caught a very attractive woman at a table across from us gazing directly at Andre. When I looked at him, he seemed to have become aware of her attention as well, but his expression was unreadable, which made me feel very uneasy. While everyone around us raised their glasses to toast Robert and Monica, I sat motionless, so focused on the exchange between Andre and the mystery woman, that I didn’t raise my glass. Finally I snapped out of it, picked up my glass belatedly and raised it along with the others. The band started playing music shortly after Robert finished his speech. Andre and this mystery woman continued to exchange gazes. I stood up without saying anything to him and walked towards the entrance of the house. I heard him calling after me, but I didn’t stop. I needed to get out of there. I didn’t know where I was going, but I just needed to get as far away as possible.
